NAPA COTTAGE
Renovation of a 1930's bungalow in the historic Fuller Park neighborhood.
Project Brief
Initially purchased as a second home for future renters, the clients felt a responsibility to adhere to the built heritage of the site in a rapidly developing city. The house is located in Fuller Park, a historical neighborhood denoted for its pre-World War II single family residential architecture. The footprint is modest, with two bedrooms and one bathroom, a galley kitchen, and small living and dining areas, all in need of restoration.
Here, a type of Californian feeling of hygge permeates through the site: a Norwegian concept of living unified by coziness, a sense of home, and a new heart through the connection to the outdoors.

Design Process
Drawing on documents gathered from the City of Napa Historical Society and observations from longtime residents and neighbors on the street, all parts of the house were scrutinized to find what historical elements worth keeping, altering, or redoing completely. The main priority of the exterior facade was to give back to the historical essence of the community, while the interiors found balance between modern comfort and character.
This house is a reflection of the neighborhood and the community as much as it is personal tastes. Preparations are in progress for Phase 2 of the property, including the conversion of a storage shed, into an ADU and renovation to the garden, which will follow the same ideals and care given to the main house.
